IG not accepting my phone number

I add the phone number to my account, receive the verification code, and enter it correctly. However, after verification, I get the message: “There was a problem adding your phone number.”

The number is a legitimate mobile number, not a virtual or VoIP number. What could be causing this issue?

BUMP. I tried the same phone number on another account, same thing, fails to add. Is it because of country code?
