the tumor is:

What is Ewing’s Tumor?

Ewing’s tumor, or Ewing sarcoma, is a rare and aggressive type of cancer that typically affects bones or the surrounding soft tissue. It is most commonly found in children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 20. The femur (thigh bone) is one of the most frequent sites where this tumor develops.

Characteristics of Ewing’s Tumor in the Femur

  1. Location and Growth:
  • The tumor often originates in the shaft (middle) of the femur.
  • It can invade surrounding soft tissues, making it a “bone and soft tissue” cancer.
  1. Symptoms:
  • Pain: Persistent and worsening pain in the affected leg, often severe and deep.
  • Swelling: The affected area may appear swollen and feel warm.
  • Limited Mobility: Difficulty walking or limited motion in the hip or knee.
  • Weakness: The femur may weaken, increasing the risk of fractures.
  • Systemic Signs: Fever, fatigue, or unintentional weight loss may occur in advanced cases.
  1. Radiologic Features:
  • X-rays: Show a characteristic “onion-skin” appearance due to the layered periosteal reaction.
  • MRI/CT Scan: Used for detailed imaging to assess the size, location, and spread of the tumor.
  • Bone Scan or PET Scan: Helps detect metastasis (spread) to other areas, such as the lungs or other bones.
  1. Diagnosis:
  • Biopsy: A tissue sample is taken to confirm the presence of Ewing’s sarcoma.
  • Genetic Testing: Often shows a specific chromosomal translocation, such as the EWSR1-FLI1 fusion gene.
  1. Treatment:
  • Chemotherapy: Typically the first step to shrink the tumor and address any microscopic spread.
  • Surgery: Removal of the tumor, often followed by reconstructive procedures (e.g., bone grafts or prosthetics).
  • Radiation Therapy: Used in cases where complete surgical removal isn’t possible.
  • Multidisciplinary Approach: Involves oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, and radiation specialists.

Prognosis and Support

  • Survival Rate: With modern treatments, the 5-year survival rate can range from 50–70% for localized disease. If the cancer has metastasized, the prognosis may be less favorable.
  • Emotional Support: A diagnosis like this can be overwhelming for a teenager and their family. Counseling and support groups can be beneficial.

Ewing sarcoma treatment has advanced significantly, and many young people recover and lead full lives. It’s crucial to follow the guidance of a pediatric oncologist and seek care at a specialized cancer treatment center.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re dealing with this. I’m no expert on the subject, but I’ve heard that places like Switzerland have some of the most advanced approaches to cancer treatment (aside from the US). From what I understand, they focus on personalized care by analyzing each case individually. They test cancer samples to create tailored chemotherapy options that work best for the specific type of cancer, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. I know a few people who successfully overcame cancer there and spoke highly of their experience. I hope this information might help in some way.

What country is he in?

No, I do not know the specifics other than it’s way cheaper than in the US. I will ask and get back to you, but this won’t happen fast.

Any info would be good

In Bosnia, @goat

Contact St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. They specialize in treating pediatric cancers, including Ewing and it’s 100% free. I’ve visited it a few times and know they accept international patients, so I would give them a call to inquire.

I drive by it all the time (most recently two days ago) and have been there on various music tours. Lot’s of celebs/talent visit children and donate to it. They’re a top children’s hospital in the US.

@swapd

Did you get name of clinic or anything? Thank you

Yes. The friend of a friend who cured her lung cancer went to University Hospital in Zurich.

Thank you
Is that this one https://www.usz.ch/

If that’s the one close to the airport, then yes. You need to check though if that type of cancer is something they do, because they mostly specialize in lung cancer.
