We’re taking a page out of Facebook’s book (that sounded weird) and at the end of January 30, (2020) we will purge SWAPD! But wait! It’s not what you think. We will not go around and start banning users (more than usual), we’re talking about purging previous data. Over the past two years, we’ve accumulated lots of information in the users PMs and past tickets. We’re talking passwords, copy of passports, ID’s, company details, and other sensitive information.
We’re a firm believer that no website is unbreachable and safe from leaks/hacks. Especially in this business, we’re at high risk of revenge from scorned scammers whom we outwitted. This is why starting in 2020, we will purge all past data inside PM’s and tickets. We’re posting this topic so members get ready. If you have important contacts/info inside your PM’s, download/save them. At the end of January, we will wipe everything to the very beginning. We will keep only one backup copy in an offline hard drive (as required by our tax law) in case we ever need to access the previous data.
We plan to do this annually or bi-annually, we’re not sure yet. So make sure you’re prepared. We will give you two more notifications before this actually happens so that you’re not surprised that your inbox is empty, and your ticket list shows zero.
Thank you for understanding, and thank you for using SWAPD.
Two more weeks to go! The purge will happen between Jan 1st - Jan 5th. We will only leave data from last 45 days, everything prior to that (PMs/Tickets), will be totally wiped.
I would also like to point out that we’re only deleting PMs and tickets, not the actual topics. Some users are confused about this, they thought EVERYTHING will be deleted. No, just old data in private messages, which no one uses anymore and shouldn’t be laying around, especially since many of these inboxes contain very sensitive information.
Well, if anyone was questioning this move or calling it silly, you can stop now. It has begun!
Over the past 48 hours someone sent 350K various requests to our server trying to find a way in. There was a security scan sort of thing, looking for open directories, attempting all kinds of vulnerabilities. Nothing successful though. But, people are poking around, and this is why:
We will start purging data every year or semi-annually
We’re 5-6 days away from the purge. We’ve never done this before so we’re hoping our actions won’t have any undesired consequences. But since we already have people pen-testing our security, we believe that it’s wiser to remove the old data.
The purge is underway and will take a couple of days. Our server admins tell us deleting something from this platform isn’t easy due to the database security and integrity checks. Hence the long process. Last chance to save any important PMs you may have before they are gone.
