Instagram’s recent policy changes are slowing down account transfers big time, and it’s causing headaches for both sellers and buyers.
Here’s the rundown on what’s happening:
7-Day Password Change Wait: After changing the password, you have to wait 7 days before you can hand over the credentials to the buyer. Then, the buyer has to wait another 7 days before they can change the password themselves. That’s a minimum of 14 days just for a secure transfer!
Device Recognition Restrictions: Instagram now restricts password changes until the account is “well-known” on the device. This vague requirement adds even more delays, as it seems to depend on account activity and device familiarity.
These changes are making transfers painfully slow and clunky, especially for those of us who need quick and smooth handovers. Has anyone found a reliable workaround to speed things up? Whether it’s a creative method to bypass the wait times or a way to satisfy Instagram’s device recognition faster, we’d love to hear your tips and tricks!
Drop your ideas below, and let’s figure out how to navigate this new Instagram mess together. Thanks in advance for any insights!
One idea comes to mind, let users do the transfers directly, that cuts down on seven days. But in a few instances, it could be risky (especially with new buyers/sellers).
i think letting users do the transfer is a good option, but only works if the Seller is a reputable member. I can see a lot of issues coming up like that.
What about asking the seller to use a VPN on his phone in a specific city like Frankfurt, then having the buyer use the same VPN to mimic a similar location?
I’m leaning towards this. Although it could pose some risk, we’ve already done this with TikTok transfers from the beginning (years at this point), and we honestly have less disputes/problems in those tickets than almost any others.
Allowing users to handle the transfers directly could also mean less potential lockups due to different devices/IPs accessing them as sellers can directly add buyers’ 2FA onto the accounts.

Yes, there is a risk of that. There is also a risk with that during TikTok transfers, but yet here we are, staff doesn’t manage them, and we virtually have zero problems during transfers. TikTok is also sensitive to multiple logins so we don’t touch it. And TBH I can only remember one problematic ticket.
When stuff will go bad, we can always try to investigate, ensure that the buyer is ID-verified (forcing new buyers who may be lying about credentials and stuff to ID verify is a great way of getting rid of pranksters).
But, then again, this is all one big unknown. The current 14-day wait sucks, and handing over responsibility also sucks. Can’t win, have to pick the least evil option.
I was bringing it up as a solution not a problem. If the account won’t let the buyer change the password when logging in, they could just reset password from an email reset before they login for the first time.
I think swapd needs to stop securing the accounts themselves and directly transfer the details to the buyer. Swapd should simply check if the passwords are correct by entering only the password but not the authorisation code.
Then instruct the buyer to login only and wait for 7 days without changing any passwords or 2fac as that would trigger security measures.
Once the 7 day period is over, the buyer should change the passwords and secure the account.
That’s what we have been doing since the previously most recent IG update, but now that doesn’t seem to be working.
Us checking whether or not the passwords are correct is useless. As soon as we send it over to the buyer, the seller can still change it regardless and the ticket could become problematic that way.
In addition to that, that creates logins from different devices/IPs for no reason, due to the above stated.
