Twitter to free up inactive usernames

Hi all,

It’s just been confirmed that in December Twitter is going to take back (delete) accounts that haven’t been logged into in 6 months. It will then enable anyone to then claim those usernames. So if you have your eye on an inactive twitter handle then you may get lucky for Christmas!

They didn’t say they are cleaning up the usernames and make them available to claim. They said they are going to delete accounts, i’m sure they wont put all OG usernames back on the street again.

Let’s see…

Spoke to my rep about this, seems like anything below 5 ch is still off limits and theyll be doing them throughout couple months, not all that day

Hopefully I get the 6 letter one to match all my other social accounts

This could be huge! Any sources or is this all insider stuff?
If this is true, my Christmas list will include Twitter usernames.
Also 6 months seems like over-kill (I have my own accounts I use somethings and I log in 1-2 per year).

yep all hitting the press today…

Twitter hasn’t yet said exactly when recouped usernames will be made available to existing users. The account removal process “will happen over many months — not just on a single day,” according to the spokesperson. So don’t expect some massive username rush to happen on December 12th. It might be awhile.

I have no reason to believe that they would lie about that, but on the other hand, who knows if they will execute this correctly. I wonder how many people reading that think what I am thinking right now, which is:

I am going to contact my dev, create a reg bot and run a dictionary through it, nab a bunch of rare handles and sell them for tons of money.

More money for me

More money for me

– Said everyone who dabbles in this business.

Also, imagine how many people sit on some amazing handles thinking “I always got that to fall back on”, but they don’t follow the industry/news/etc. One day they will attempt to monetize it and find that their account already belongs to someone else.

Oh my lord, this may also create a flood of “OMG I was hacked” reports.

As it states in the articles posted above, users who are at risk of being deleted, have received an email notification stating that they need to log into their account if they wish to keep it. These emails will be sent roughly once every 2 weeks (or so) until the actual deletion finds place.

Accounts that are deleted will also be able to recover their handles in a grace period after deletion, and the usernames won’t be available to claim right away. Usernames 1-5 characters will still be unavailable to claim for the regular Twitter user.

People become blind to those emails from social networks, or they end up in the “Social” tab.
Nonetheless, I took the bait and I am talking to my dev about creating software to do do things for me
